Leopold Obi writes in Business Daily Africa about Kenya becoming the first country in East Africa to adopt genetically modified (GM) cotton, with one metric tonne of Bt cotton seeds planted on demonstration plots this year.
Kenya could go on to be the first in the region to grow biotech food crops, Obi writes. He cites the progress of disease resistant GM cassava with VIRCA Plus lead researcher, Prof Douglas Miano.
“We have evaluated the cassava varieties we have developed for human and environmental safety and I can confirm that it is good, highly resistant to the diseases, and its nutritional composition has not been affected in any way,” Prof Miano said.
